Movies That Matter on Tour: Mai Khoi and the Dissidents

Als dochter van een muziekleraar is Mai Khoi’s leven al van kinds af aan gevuld met muziek. Ze werd een superster met haar doorbraaknummer ‘Vietnam’, over de schoonheid van haar moederland. Maar meer en meer begint Mai Khoi haar sterrenstatus te gebruiken om zich uit te spreken over tal van sociale onderwerpen, zoals vrouwenrechten, lgbt-rechten en vrijheid van meningsuiting. De politie begint invallen te doen bij haar concerten, en al snel verbiedt de overheid haar optredens.

Regisseur Joe Piscatella (Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower) volgt Mai Khoi tijdens de opnames van haar album Dissent dat, zoals ze zelf zegt, ‘de regering kwaad zal maken’. Terwijl haar politieke activisme haar internationale bekendheid vergroot, maakt ze plannen om het land te ontvluchten voordat het album wordt uitgebracht.

As the daughter of a music teacher, Mai Khoi’s life was filled with music from birth. She became hugely popular with her breakthrough-song ‘Vietnam’, about the beauty of her home country. But more and more, Mai Khoi uses her position of stardom to speak out about a range of social issues such as women’s rights, LGBT rights and freedom of speech. Soon, the police start raiding her concerts, and the government bans her from performing.

Director Joe Piscatella (Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower) follows Mai Khoi during the recording of her album Dissent which, she says, ‘I know will make the government angry’. As her political activism heightens her international profile, she makes plans to leave the country before the album is released.

After the screening John Kleinen and Wouter Hins will reflect on the documentary and answer questions from the audience for about 35 minutes. Kleinen (University of Amsterdam) is an anthropologist and historian and Vietnam-expert. He will provide historical context to the documentary. Hins is Professor emeritus in law at the Leiden Law Faculty, specialized in freedom of speech, in particular by way of journalism and cultural expresion. Amongst other things he will discuss the argument, often deployed by Asian states when criticized about their poor human rights rack record, that freedom of speech is a Western value forced upon Asian countries but not indigenous to them.
